Due to open in 2025, Laggan Bay Distillery will become the 12th whisky distillery on the iconic island of Islay. Famous around the world for its distinct peaty and smoky whiskies, this island is home to some of the most highly-regarded whiskies in the world. CMA have developed this new distillery for Islay based on a strong track record of distillery development bot on Islay and the mainland. The new distillery is a partnership between Ian Macleod Distillers and The Islay Boys, whose newly completed brewery (Also by CMA) sits next to it at Glenegedale, close to Islay’s stunning Laggan Bay.

The project has been a long time in development and has gone through many variations due to changing sites and changing brief. The site at Glanegedale, beside Islay airport has had its challenges but the combination of client determination and flexibility of our designing performance has led us to a very efficient layout that will showcase the products made here.

The clients aim was to be very environmentally conscious with our design approach. Inspired by Laggan Bay, an area of outstanding natural beauty, the distillery has sustainability at the heart of its journey, and will feature dedicated wetlands, to manage liquid waste and provide a haven for wildlife. The distillery will use the latest energy efficiency and sustainable design see on the island. Efficient heat recovery, energy production and unique to Islay, a sustainable natural plant digestion system to control effluent. The Living Water wetlands will enhance the biodiversity of the distillery massively.
