Bowmore Phase 2 & 3
Ceol a Chuain’, Bowmore, Islay
Argyl Community Housing Association (ACHA)
CMA have completed the designs for a further two phases at Bowmore Ilay for Argyll Community Housing Association. The houses were delivered through the Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP). These Phase 2 & 3 comprise of 32 units in total The original contract for Phase 1 was successfully tendered by MacLeod Construction who continued to develop phases 2 and three where we became involved. These initial houses were in great demand and provided necessary affordable housing to the local community.
Our brief for phase 2 & 3 formed around the indicative road layout in the Shoreline Masterplan. We opted for a simple continuation to Phase 1 and allowed for parallel off-street parking down to a hammer head junction which would lead to further phases.
The housing style of Islay is quite distinct and each village replicates the same type of residential buildings which predominately are two storey construction painted white with the windows framed out in plain coloured reveals. The original design of the housing within Bowmore was directly onto the street (with no pavement; cars not being an issue in the late eighteenth century) so the drive towards Designing for Streets was understandable.
Phase 3 connected directly to Phase 2 and stayed close to the masterplan which is now approved. Phase 4 and 5 are in development.
