New Learning Centre, Springburn, Glasgow

Glasgow North Ltd

The former Springburn Library and Museum, built in 1904-6 became redundant in 2001 with the opening of a new library in the local shopping centre. Campbell and Morris Associates were appointed by Glasgow North Ltd to develop proposals for converting the building into a Lifelong Learning Enterprise and Conference Centre.

Work commenced in September 2004, with completion achieved in April 2005, and included :

  • Re-roofing with natural slate

  • Renewal of leadwork

  • Provision of new warm roof with asphalt finish

  • Stone repairs and re-pointing

  • Window and rooflight replacement

  • Render repairs

  • Internal refurbishment to suit new use

  • Renewal of heating and ventilation installations

  • Renewal of power, lighting and data installations

  • Provision of audio-visual conference facilities and automated blackout system

  • Provision of security and staff alarm systems

  • Formation of car park and improved access

The project involved major internal interventions, including the full renewal of services installation, which had to suit modern commercial requirements while remaining sympathetic to the original character of the property.

The original 3D computer generated model of the reception area makes an interesting comparison with the as built solution.
